The travel team program is a rewarding basketball program for the experienced player who desires to play at the middle or high school level some day. Girls can expect to enhance their skills through league and tournament competition versus intermediate to advanced players from other communities around northeast Ohio. Travel teams consist of, and compete against, skilled players of the same grade level. You must live within the boundaries of the Chardon Local School District to play on one of the Chardon teams (though it is not necessary to currently attend one of the Chardon public schools).

The City of Chardon will attempt to field at least one team each for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Girls must try out for the travel teams. Each team consists of approximately 10 to 12 players. The 2016 tryouts will be held at Chardon Middle School on September 24th and 25th. Girls will be selected by an impartial panel based on proficiency in skills, game awareness, overall effort, and potential for development. Previous selection does not guarantee selection this year. No fee is required to try out. Tryouts are closed to parents, and players must attend both sessions.

If you are selected to a travel team, payment of $200 for the travel team season is required (discounted to $153 if you can reuse a full uniform from last year). Please see information on the city's web site at for information on registation and tryouts.

The following describes the general expectation of the travel teams.

Travel team practices begin shortly after the teams are selected and continue until the season ends in March. Players are expected to attend a few team practices every week in Chardon, as gym availability allows. Please remember that practices at the schools are cancelled whenever school is cancelled. Players should refer to their online schedule on this site for the latest scheduling.

On Saturdays and Sundays starting in mid-November through the end of January, the travel teams play in the Midwest Travel Basketball League. A few notable teams playing in this league in the past include Aurora, Chagrin Falls, Hudson, Kenston, Mentor, Nordonia, Ravenna, Solon, Streetsboro, Twinsburg, and West Geauga. You will need to travel to Bainbridge (Kenston Schools) for these games. Time-off from the league schedule takes place during the Christmas and New Year holidays, though teams sometimes opt to play in a holiday tournament.

Travel teams begin playing a tournament schedule in February and March. Each team is expected to compete in 5 to 7 tournaments held at various locations throughout northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania. A mandatory tournament for all Chardon teams is the Chardon Girls' Youth Basketball Tournament that we host in March. All travel team players and families are expected to volunteer some time working at the Chardon tournament. All profits earned are invested directly back into the travel program to help keep your travel team registration fee extremely low in comparison to similar programs in other communities.
